It seems impossible that this is true...but 1 year ago yesterday my sweet husband donated 60% of his liver to his father. And tonight we leave to go to Boston for John's final checkup on his liver.
Most reading this blog know the complete story so I won't go into all of the details. It didn't turn out the way we had hoped or planned for John's father and he is dearly missed each and every day of our lives. He was an amazing man and spent his life doing for other people. I just can't say enough about it. I miss him a ton!
John was and is the poster child for organ donation. There were some small hiccups in the days following the surgery but they were fairly easily remedied. He has healed amazingly and continues to have no last effects from surgery. Well except the scar across his abdomen. Alot of people wouldn't go through with what my husband did or would be scared to do it. My husband went through the process with not a question in his mind. Didn't care what the risks might be, never questioned what "might" happen. It was never an option to John NOT to do it. He knew it from the second we found out it was possible that John would be the donor. He was amazing through the process, not a fear in his head.
My request to anyone reading would be to be an organ donor. I never knew the full impact of people needing organs until this process and it's just so very important. Heck! We don't need them once we're gone. It's an amazing gift to give, the gift of life.
Thank you to everyone that supported us and John's family through this process a year ago and still to this day. We love you all!
On a humorous note: At John's appointment we will go to on Tuesday, they will give him the "OK" to drink again after a full year... and he is soooooooo excited to have that beer. Of course, that 1 beer will probably have him completely drunk !
I love you babe! You are definitely a HERO!
